Bridging The Gap: The 4-Leadership & 4- Followership Attributes +2
Welcome Everyone! Hope you are enjoying the stories about our past Presidents. They were men who were hired by the American people to lead and navigate the United States (US) through all situations-good and bad. We witnessed them confront and address problems with care and consistency to make sure their constituents were protected. Their leadership and character were always under scrutiny, as they either hurt or moved America forward. You could see clearly or with some challenge how the Four Leadership Attributes: Self-Worth; Effective Communication; Team Building; and Strategic Management were active or lacking in their leadership posture and response. Hopefully, this is where my Evaluation Table was instrumental for you in the attribute assessment, per my research.
Although the leadership subjects of my stories were the US Presidents, you as a leader should see that leadership has no respect for persons. No matter where you lead on the organization chart, you must embrace your self-worth; communicate effectively; build your team; and strategically manage your business to add value to your constituents and or your customers. So, if you have been feeding your doubts about being a leader, I challenge you to stop sitting at this table and eating the thinking of someone who has failed in leading. This person has an unhealthy and harmful palette that has kept them from growing and it will do the same thing to you if you continue to eat what they are sharing with you.
If you want to change your leadership palate and gain some insights about followership, these next stories will empower you to make this happen. They will share how Leadership and Followership work together to fulfill demands, consistently and accurately. You will understand how Leadership is the living foundation that must have the right capacity to carry the weight of the structure resting on it. This critical assignment that it embodies is not based on religion, gender or ethnicity. Instead, it encompasses the 4-Attributes + 2 — Self-Worth, Effective Communication, Team Building, Strategic Management, Plus Celebration, and Feedback. If these six are healthy and growing, Foundation/Leadership will be strong enough to accommodate the Interpersonal Structure/Followership. Conversely, if they are not healthy, the same will apply in the opposite direction.
As I said, Leadership and Followership work together. When one wins, the other wins — when one loses, the other loses. They are inseparable and must be mentioned and viewed as such. Unfortunately, I have seen leaders condescend their followers and followers dismiss their leaders. Both scenarios are bad and create hostile working environments in which process performance declines and customer demands are not met, respectively. So now you should see that both Leadership and followership need attention and help. How? Just like there are attributes for leaders, there are attributes for followers: Self-Worth, Effective Communication, Team Player, Process Owner, Plus Celebrate, and Feedback. They are a close match to each other minus two differences: Team Player and Process Owner.
In the subsequent stories, we will go deeper into both sets of attributes to understand how they help each other to fulfill their daily commitment, individually and collectively. Buckle up and let us enjoy the journey.
